For Keeps: Collecting MemoriesOngoing
Why do we collect things? Special, saved objects can remind us of days past, transport us to another place, or help us remember the stories we tell. When an object is chosen to be saved, it is removed from its former context as an everyday, functional thing, and is redefined by its collector. As collectors decide which objects to keep and why, they create their own identity and build their own story about the past.
For Keeps—Collecting Memories at the Galt Museum & Archives features artifacts from the Galt's collections and personal collections that have different kinds of human histories. Visitors can enter a video booth to record the story of their own collections, adding to the oral history of southwestern Alberta. The exhibit asks visitors: “What transforms an everyday object into a treasure worth preserving”?
