Exhibition Proposals

The Galt Museum & Archives (Galt) invites curators, photographers, and artists to submit proposals for future exhibitions. The Galt mandate must be reflected in the exhibition:

The Galt Museum & Archives engages and educates our communities in the human history of southwestern Alberta by preserving and sharing collections, stories, and memories that define our collective identity and guide our future.

The Galt has two available exhibition spaces, each with its own unique size and requirements. The main floor exhibit space is a hallway with 21 linear metres (71 linear feet) of wall space. There is floor space for one to three cases but this diminishes the wall space accordingly. The lower floor exhibit space is also a hallway, with 17 linear metres (58 linear feet) of wall space. It is best suited to two-dimensional shows but may also accommodate one display case. Both hallway spaces have camera surveillance and LED lighting. The walls are interrupted by doors, other hallways, etc. and the spaces do not have museum standard humidity and temperature control.

The Galt Museum & Archives develops and implements a three-year exhibit plan so inclusion is dependent on space in the schedule and approval by management and the exhibit committee. If a submission is accepted, the applicant may receive a small honorarium. Please note that the Galt Museum & Archives maintains curatorial oversight for all projects accepted.

Submission Requirements

  1. Cover Letter. This letter should contain an introduction, contact information, and a brief summary of your exhibition proposal.
  2. Artist/Curator’s Statement/Proposal. The artist/curator’s statement or proposal should indicate the media, technique, theme or context of the proposed exhibition. It should also address the estimated number of objects or artworks, and any specific technical, spatial or special requirements regarding the installation of the work or exhibition. Please limit to one to two pages.
  3. Current Curriculum Vitae. Include a current copy of your CV or resumé, listing educational background and exhibition history. This should not exceed two pages.
  4. Images. Include 10–12 images with a corresponding list indicating title, medium, size, and dates. CDs, DVDs, and PC-compatible USB sticks are acceptable.
  5. Relevant Support Material. If relevant, include a selection of support material, such as an example of your writing, copies of recent reviews and publications, and a list of suggested artifacts.

Note: Incomplete proposals will not be accepted. All exhibition proposals will be reviewed by a committee so please ensure that your submission and supporting material can be photocopied easily for review. Only those whose exhibition proposals are under consideration will be contacted. The Galt will only return submissions that include a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage.

Please do not submit original work, slides or master copies. The Galt Museum & Archives does not accept responsibility for any loss or damages to the content of your submission package.

Floor plans are available upon request.

Please send submissions to curator Aimee Bennoit.
