Whirligigs & Weathervanes Festival Details

Suddenly, the time has come! All around Lethbridge, people are donning beanies, spinning pinwheels and wishing for wind [but not too much] in anticipation of the Galt Museum & Archives Whirligigs & Weathervanes Family Festival on the Prairies taking place Saturday, August 31 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Included in the day’s activities are:

OUTDOORS

  • 6+ Alberta artists and artisans showcasing 17+ whirligig and weathervane creations and vying for three $500 prizes: Best of Show, Best Historical, and People’s Choice – those in attendance will be asked to vote for their favourite festival entry

  • Kite flying demos by the Windy Hills Kite Folks
    WEST OF THE SOUTH PATIO

  • Music by the Coal Creek Boys [two sets:11:00 am-noon & 1:00-2:00 pm]
    and Alyssa McQuaid [one set: noon-1:00 pm] SOUTH PATIO

  • Giant Bubble Blowing

  • Games: Checkers, Giant Snakes & Ladders

INDOORS

  • Wind crafts: pinwheels, wind chimes & whirligigs

  • A Haiku contest related to wind winner announced next week

  • A “Who has seen the wind” photo contest: bring in photos, take photos at the Festival, or upload to Facebook winner announced next week

  • A photo booth: get blown away!

  • Tasty festival foods: hot dogs, buffalo smokies, salad-in-a-jar, chips, popcorn, chocolate pretzels, ice cream, lemonade and more!

The Festival is held in conjunction with the exhibit Wind Work, Wind Play: Whirligigs & Weathervanes, organized and circulated by the Canadian Museum of Civilization. The exhibit closes September 2 at 5:00 pm. Festival and Museum admission is free on August 31!
