Lethbridge —The Galt Museum & Archives | Akaisamitohkanao’pa (eternal gathering place) presents its newest temporary exhibition, Extra! Extra! Eras of Photojournalism in Lethbridge, on display until August 5, 2024.

Since 1905, the Lethbridge Herald has been a hub for residents to learn about local and global news. The growth of photography within the Herald and Lethbridge has developed from film to digital, with this exhibit focusing on six photographers and photojournalists who embraced this change.

Featuring compelling images captured by renowned photographers and photojournalists, the exhibit offers a unique perspective on historic events in Lethbridge. This immersive experience invites viewers to reflect on the world around them and the stories that shape what is around us today.

While this was previously an online exhibit curated by Bobbie Fox, that featured Lloyd Knight, Orville Brunelle, David Rossiter, and Ian Martens, two more photographers were added to the physical form of this exhibit.

“It’s such a privilege to bring Ose Irete and Alejandra Pulido-Guzman into this exhibit. Present-day journalism is changing quickly and including more voices that represent this shift is so important,” explains Tess McNaughton, guest curator for the exhibit.

This exhibit explores the three “eras” of photography and photojournalism, including the Analogue Era, Transitional Era, and Digital Era. Each era has two photographers representing the times, and their photographs provide snapshots into the periods of the eras. While the technological change from film to digital was an important development, the change in roles is also emphasized in this exhibition.

“While there used to be a division between photographers and journalists, there has been a transition towards these roles being combined, until the present where photojournalism is the most common position,” adds McNaughton.
