“My Grandfather, Peter Speaker [Spegar] came to Lethbridge in 1880 and my Grandmother, Elizabeta Popson came in 1893 from Nizne, Slovinky, Slovakia to be coal miners, then homestead farmers in 1908 in in the Enchant area. Lethbridge has been our major commerce centre and service community. The Speakers, married in 1893 and raised eleven children, owning property in central Lethbridge then moving to the north side as mines one, two and three were opened. In the picture attached of Hon. Raymond Speaker, third generation and his mouther Olga Speaker, married to Michael Speaker, second generation are turning the sod for the Garden View Seniors Residence.”
