Lethbridge – The Galt Museum & Archives | Akaisamitohkanao’pa (eternal gathering place) is proud to announce the launch of a new temporary exhibition, Transplanted Sunflowers: The Ukrainian Immigrant Experience in Southern Alberta, 1940s to Present. This captivating exhibition offers a comprehensive exploration of the Ukrainian immigrant experience in southern Alberta from the mid-20th century to the early 21st century. It is scheduled to be on display from October 14, 2023 to April 7, 2024 at the Galt Museum & Archives.
Inspired by the recent wave of forced Ukrainian relocation caused by the Russian invasion beginning in February 2022, Transplanted Sunflowers is co-curated by the Galt Archives Assistant, Bobbie Fox, and former Galt Archives Records Assistant, Hannah Yuzwa. This exhibit delves into the rich and diverse history of Ukrainian immigrants who have made Lethbridge and its surrounding areas their home, showcasing their unique experiences, challenges and contributions to the region.
The exhibition utilizes a wealth of historical resources, including Galt archival images, private collections and artifacts from heritage institutions, to provide visitors with a comprehensive view of the Ukrainian immigrant experience. Additionally, Transplanted Sunflowers explores seven Ukrainian individuals, groups and organizations that have impacted the southern Alberta community, such as the renowned Gushul family, known for their award-winning documentary photography in the Crowsnest Pass.
To immerse visitors in the richness of Ukrainian culture, the exhibition features a video of Lethbridge’s Troyanda Ukrainian Dance Club. Accompanying programming will offer further insights into the cultural contributions that have woven Ukrainian heritage into the fabric of southern Alberta.
Beyond celebrating the vibrant Ukrainian community in Southern Alberta, the exhibition aims to foster meaningful conversations about the Ukrainian people and their connection to Ukraine. This will lead to a greater understanding of their unwavering commitment to preserving their culture and independence in the face of adversity, particularly in light of the ongoing war. Transplanted Sunflowers seeks to serve as a catalyst for dialogue, understanding and support for the Ukrainian community.
"Ukrainians have endured so much since the invasion of February 2022. This exhibit hopes to display the resiliency of Ukrainians and the Ukrainian community in southern Alberta,” says Hannah Yuzwa, Guest Curator. “As a Canadian-born Ukrainian, I am very proud of my heritage and this exhibit has allowed me to reconnect with my Ukrainian roots in a very profound way."
Bobbie Fox, Co-curator and Galt Archives Assistant adds, "This exhibit is only scratching the surface of southern Alberta's Ukrainian community history. We were able to highlight only a handful of amazing people and organizations that are part of this community."
Transplanted Sunflowers: The Ukrainian Immigrant Experience in Southern Alberta, 1940s to Present promises to be a thought-provoking and immersive journey through history, culture, and resilience. The Galt Museum & Archives invites visitors of all backgrounds to explore this remarkable exhibition and join in celebrating the Ukrainian community's enduring legacy in southern Alberta.
