Lethbridge—Since 2011, the Galt Museum & Archives has featured a large 1950s photograph of a crowd of shoppers beside its entrance.  The image features prominently and represents the institution’s commitment to local heritage. Times have changed; our community has changed. The museum is renewing this space with a Community Mosaic made up of hundreds of portraits of southern Albertans, which will welcome every member of the community to the museum.

"The Galt's community mosaic initiative provides a unique opportunity to showcase the many different faces that make up southwestern Alberta," says Darrin Martens, Executive Director of the Galt. "Our region has diversified significantly over the past two decades and welcomed families from across the globe. This portrait project will bring together representation from many communities in one place to reveal the beautiful mosaic of people and cultures that we have become."

Anyone who considers themselves a southwestern Albertan may contribute. Project criteria and instructions for how to upload a portrait can be found on the museum's website at www.galtmuseum.com/community-mosaic. Submissions will be accepted between May 1 and May 31. Submitted portraits will be added to the archives to form part of the historical record of the region.

The Community Mosaic will be installed on the north-facing windows near the museum's main entrance, where the 1950s photograph is currently on display. The mosaic will be unveiled in early July.
