The Friends Society of the Sir Alexander Galt Museum & Archives Presents: An Evening with Brian Keating

Lethbridge —The Friends Society of the Sir Alexander Galt Museum & Archives (“The Friends”) is delighted to announce a unique opportunity for you to spend an evening with Brian Keating, the renowned adventurer, in support of educational programming at the Galt. This special event will be held at the Galt on Wednesday, November 16, 2022. Doors open at 7:00 PM.

Brian Keating

Brian Keating is an adventurer, pilot, naturalist, scuba diver, mountaineer, children's author and wildlife tour guide extraordinaire. He has been leading groups in nature-based travel for over three decades, exploring some of the most amazing wildlife areas on the planet. He’s a weekly guest on CBC Radio Calgary and has been recognized for his dedication to environmental efforts with numerous awards and honorary degrees. His inspiring and educational discussion of leadership and the magic of the natural world is not to be missed.

Evening Program

On November 16, Keating will be making two presentations, the first of which is “Cold Leadership: Into The Last Great Wilderness.” According to Keating, this is the story of “one of the most remarkable stories of risk-taking and survival as played out in the frozen seascapes of the Antarctic. Ernest Shackleton was an extraordinary leader, who beat all possible odds during a two-year struggle with survival.”

Keating has retraced much of Shackleton’s original route, including three successful landings on the remote Elephant Island where 22 of Shackleton’s men spent four long months awaiting rescue. By taking the audience on a journey through one of the most astounding survival adventures of all time, Keating will share the lessons that Shackleton’s story teaches us about life and leadership. He will illustrate the leadership qualities that enabled Shackleton to return home without a single loss of life, and the ways in which this ice-bound situation of courage and endurance can give us insights into our own possibilities.

Then, Keating will head into the icy waters of the Antarctic using live narrated video, to illustrate the abundance of life and explore the hauntingly beautiful landscape. This inspiring discussion will be of particular interest to corporate leaders, CEOs, managers, entrepreneurs, teachers, academics and anyone wishing to examine their own capabilities of courage and leadership.

Following an intermission, during which there will be a chance to chat with Brian, his second presentation of the evening will be “Going Wild in Strange Times,” a spirit-lifting journey into some of the best Canadian wilderness locations. After some brief forays into international locations, Brian will return to his own western Canadian landscapes, reconfirming the value of our collective understanding of the importance of wild spaces and the creatures that have adapted to live there.

What remarkable western Canadian locations did Brian explore over the last two and a half years? What energizing face-to-face encounters did he have? How has he managed to attract so much wildlife to his inner-city garden? The answers to these questions will become apparent on November 16.
