Lethbridge– To celebrate International Youth Day on August 12, 2021, the Galt Museum & Archives will unveil a new mural hosted on its south patio that has been designed by three young local artists: Sydney Whiting, Kyra Peake and Grace Fletcher.

Unveiling to start at 5 pm, followed by brief speeches and a media scrum. Community and press members welcome.

Opening remarks will be made by Darrin Martens, CEO and Executive Director of the Galt Museum & Archives. The keynote speaker is James Byrne, a Professor of Geography at the University of Lethbridge and a Director with the Climate Hub of Southern Alberta. Given his extensive expertise in global environmental change and water resources, he will be speaking on the applicability of the mural’s topics in our modern world.

Collaboratively designed by the trio, the “mural seeks to demonstrate the rich connections between youth activism, artistry and environmentalism… [and] highlights our Lethbridge landscape,” says Sydney Whiting, Director of Youth + Local Action for the Climate Hub of Southern Alberta. Sydney Whiting will also be speaking at the event as the Project Lead.

“Finding new ways to inform our community of climate change, while showcasing new voices, new viewpoints and offering practical solutions to help us create a better, more sustained planet reflects our commitments here at the Galt Museum & Archives to engaging with the issues of today and providing a diversity of perspectives and voices,”  states the Galt’s Executive Director and CEO Darrin Martens.

This project is supported by the Climate Hub of Southern Alberta. Funding for this initiative was made possible through the Alberta Council for Global Cooperation, TakingITGlobal #RisingYouth Grants, and the Government of Canada.
