Galt Museum Offering Walking Wednesday Tours Throughout July and August

The Galt Museum & Archives I Akaisamitokano’pa (eternal gathering place) is thrilled to announce the launch of Walking Wednesday Tours. These engaging tours will run every Wednesday throughout July and August, offering residents and visitors a unique opportunity to explore the rich history and cultural diversity of Lethbridge.

  • Discover the Thing: Join us for an intriguing exploration of Lethbridge's most mysterious landmark, The Thing. This enigmatic public art installation, constructed from river valley materials and shrouded in legends of spiritual activity, invites you to ponder its artistic, environmental, and paranormal significance. 

  • St. Patrick's & Mountainview Cemeteries: Explore the city’s past through the lives and stories of those who have come before us. 

  • Queer History Lethbridge: Step into the vibrant and resilient history of Lethbridge’s LGBTQ+ community with our engaging walking tour. Uncover hidden stories from secret pride picnics to the city's once-thriving red-light district. Explore iconic sites such as the Croatia Community Hall's exclusive gay dances, the historic Fire Hall No. 1’s queer history, and the poignant tales behind the city's Pride crosswalks. This tour celebrates the courage, diversity, and enduring spirit of Lethbridge’s queer community, offering a unique and inclusive experience for all.

  • Watch Lethbridge Grow: Step back in time to witness the development of Lethbridge over a century ago.

  • Elizabeth Hall Wetlands Land-Based Learning: Deepen your connection with the land and learn about traditional knowledge and practices. An insightful journey through the Elizabeth Hall Wetlands, named after environmental advocate Elizabeth 'Liz' Hall. Discover the traditional Blackfoot science interwoven into the landscape, as we delve into the significance of the plants and animals, fostering a deeper connection with our local spaces and exploring nature as a teacher.

  • Niitsitapi Tree Burial: Discover the river valley's historical significance beyond its beauty, including its role as a traditional burial place.

Walking Wednesday Tours share the unique features Lethbridge has to offer by providing knowledge on various themes.

“This year, we are excited to offer even more opportunities for people to explore Lethbridge's rich history through our summer walking tours. Our Walking Wednesday’s program is a highlight, designed as a 'choose your own historical adventure' with a fantastic lineup of both new and time-honored tours", says Kristin Krein, Community Programming Coordinator at the Galt Museum & Archives and Fort Whoop-Up.

Departing every Wednesday from the Galt, these tours provide a guided exploration through the heart of Lethbridge's past and present.

The total cost for the entire group, whether it consists of one person or the maximum of twenty-five people, is a flat rate of $65.00 plus GST.
