Marathon of Memories Presentation

Forty years ago, Albertans were eagerly watching and reading about Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope. Sadly, Terry never got to bring his Marathon of Hope to the Prairies personally. Even though Terry never ran through Lethbridge, he still touched our lives and inspired us to be involved. The first Terry Fox Fundraising Run was held in Lethbridge on September 14, 1980. After 40 years, Lethbridge residents continue to organize and participate in runs to raise funds. Terry requested that all funds raised through these runs go towards cancer research, so the runs are organized by local volunteers. As of 2020, Lethbridge run organizers and participants have raised $470,850.

You can learn more about Terry Fox's impact on Lethbridge and Southern Alberta in our exhibit Marathon of Memories: 40 Years of Terry Fox Runs in Lethbridge which is now online.

The Galt is grateful to the subject-matter experts delivering online content. As local professionals and knowledge experts, these presenters add valuable contributions to the local discourse; however, their ideas are their own. The people featured in the videos and those behind the scenes followed best practices to protect their health and safety.
