Museum Grounds
In
addition to numerous walking trails and interpretive signage, the Museum
Grounds include two gardens created in partnership with two community
groups: The Lethbridge & Distric Horticultural Society and the Galt
School of Nursing Alumnae Association. The South Garden is made possible
by additional community support.

Garden
of Native
Prairie Plants
The Lethbridge
& District Horticultural Society [LDHS] began
planting the garden containing over 40 species of native plants
in September 2008 to be ready for its 2009 Centennial Celebration.
Designed by Lethbridge-based horticulturalist
June Flanagan, it is appealing in all four seasons
and features:
-
a variety of wildflowers,
grasses and woody plants
-
attractive flowers through the growing
season
-
autumn leaf colour, seed heads, fruit,
and interesting bark
The plants are placed similar to how they
would grow in the river valley: shade tolerant species on
the slope against the north wall of the museum, the most drought
tolerant species on the steep, southwest-facing slope.
Galt volunteers collect, clean and package
the seeds, and they are available in the Galt
Museum Store!

Do
you love wildflowers?
Alberta PlantWatch is looking
for volunteer observers as 'eyes of science' to report
on blooming times for spring plants. This information
is very useful to understand how climate warming is
affecting our province, as spring plants develop in
response to winter/ spring temperatures. It can also
give you the best times to plant garden seeds, go fishing,
hiking, or even take a holiday to avoid spring allergies!
Please join Alberta
PlantWatch.

A
life-size bronze statue of a Galt School of Nursing
[GSN] Graduate commissioned from local sculptor Don Toney
is the centre-piece of this garden, Phase One of our south
garden improvements.
The
statue is surrounded by engraved
bricks sponsored by Galt Babies, GSN graduates, friends
and supporters of the Galt, and is situated in front of the
remaining 1891 Galt Hospital brick wall.
Roses,
peonies, and other flowers and shrubbery reminiscent of
early 20th Century gardens make this a wonderful, contemplative
space.

South
Garden
Improvements
to our South Garden have been made possible by the community
[through annual giving requests, facility rentals, Store proceeds
and special events]; and with input into our preliminary plans
[spring 2011]:

The
comments were incorporated into a final plan. Paving
took place in the late fall of 2011, and planting was completed
in the spring of 2012, in time for our grand opening on MAY
31! Here are the results:

Stay
tuned for the next Phase commencing in 2013.
