Prairie people are woven from a rich tapestry of many different cultures and heritages. People came here from all over the world to try their hand at farming, to try and make a better life for themselves and their children, and to seek religious freedom. We rarely think about vegetables in terms of nationalities, but many of our most-loved garden vegetables arrived here with our forefathers. Russian immigrant families brought pickling cucumbers and watermelons, Germans brought beans, Dutch brought carrots, and Mennonites brought hot peppers.
